BBR’s Adoption Process
The first step in becoming a new basset parent is to complete the on-line application so that BBR has the necessary information to begin the review process. The application does not obligate you to adopt from BBR. It is the process by which we get to know you and determine what dog would be a good match for your family. An adoption counselor can not work with you until the completed application is received and reviewed.
When the completed application is submitted and reviewed. During this time, we will also conact your vet as well as check your references. You will then be contacted for an interview. Please remember we are an all-volunteer organization and it may take up to two weeks before an adoption counselor can contact you.

I’m approved – now what happens?
Once you are approved to adopt, an adoption team member will call to discuss the available dogs with you. They will also provide you with the contact information for the foster family or families who are taking care of the dog/s/ that you both determine might be a good match for you and your family. It is your responsibility to then contact the foster family to learn more about the hound.
This is your opportunity to learn more about the dog, its personality, temperament and habits. At this time, you and the foster family may also make arrangements to meet the basset. After speaking to the foster home, you and/or the foster home may decide that this particular basset is not the right fit for your family.

How do I know which hound is the right basset for me?
We have a lot of dogs to choose from and not every dog will fit into every home. Because the foster parents know their foster dogs so well, they will make the final determination as to whether this is the right dog for your home. If it is decided that this is not a good fit, all that means is that this particular dog is not right for you. It is not a personal reflection on you or your family. The adoption team will continue to work with you until a better match is found. BBR wants you and your basset to be the best of buddies for a long time!
If we are unable to find a match for you right away, please be patient! The right dog will come along and you will have the first chance at that dog. Often, we have people waiting for a particular age or type of dog. If you are waiting for a specific type of dog, you will be given the chance to learn about dogs that are a match with your needs before they are posted on the website.

What happens after I have adopted my basset?
Once you adopt from us, we consider your family a part of our basset family community and you are invited to participate in our events and programs as much or as little as you would like to. BBR will also work with you to ensure that this is a successful, ‘forever’ adoption. We have several behaviorists that we can refer you to if your basset experiences problems. Your dog’s foster home is another a great resource since they have had ‘hands-on’ experience with its temperment and behavior. In some cases, obedience training or classes may be needed and we can help you locate those also.
You should also know that if something happens (this year, next year, five years or whenever) and you can no longer keep your basset, you are required to return them to us so we can find them another home.
Remember, you must fill out our Adoption Application before we can begin the process. If at any time during the process, you decide that a basset is not the right breed for you please let us know…we’ll understand!
